When someone in Perinthalmanna searches "dental clinic near me", or someone in Kochi searches "interior designer in Kakkanad", Google shows a map with three businesses, then a list of websites. Local SEO is the work that gets your business into those results, and it is one of the best returns a local business can get from its website.
This guide covers the steps that matter most for small and medium businesses in Kerala, in the order we recommend doing them.
1. Set up and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the map results. It is free, and it is the single most important local SEO step.
Choose the most accurate primary category, for example "Dental clinic" rather than "Health", and add relevant secondary categories.
Use your real business name, address and phone number, exactly as they appear on your website.
Add opening hours, holiday hours, services with short descriptions, and your service area if you travel to customers.
Upload real photos of the premises, team and work, and keep adding new ones.
Link to the most relevant page on your website, not just the home page.
Use posts for offers, events and updates; they keep the profile active.
2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Google cross-checks your details across your website, your profile and directories such as Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and industry listings. Small differences, such as an old phone number or a different spelling of your area, weaken trust. Pick one format and use it everywhere, then correct old listings.
3. Build pages for what people actually search
People rarely search for your business name. They search for a service and a place. Give each important service its own page with a clear title, for example "Root canal treatment in Malappuram", and explain who it is for, what it involves, how long it takes, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to book.
If you serve several towns, a page for each location works well, as long as each page has genuinely useful local information rather than the same text with the town name swapped. Mention landmarks, parking, nearby areas you serve and local contact details.
4. Get the technical basics right
A unique page title and meta description on every page, written for people, with the service and town.
One clear H1 heading per page, and logical H2 and H3 sections.
Fast loading on mobile, where most local searches happen.
A sitemap submitted in Google Search Console, with indexing checked.
Your address and phone number in the footer, and a map on the contact page.
Structured data (LocalBusiness schema) so search engines understand your details.
5. Ask for reviews, and reply to them
Reviews influence both rankings and decisions. Ask happy customers directly, at the right moment, with a short link to your review form. A printed QR code at the counter and a WhatsApp message after a visit both work well.
Reply to every review, including the critical ones, calmly and helpfully. Never buy or fake reviews; Google removes them, can suspend your profile, and it damages trust with real customers.
6. Earn local mentions and links
Links and mentions from local sources tell Google you are a real, active business. Think local news, associations, suppliers, partners, event sponsorships and industry directories. A few relevant local links are worth more than many random ones.
7. Make it easy to contact you
Local visitors want to act quickly. Put a call button and a WhatsApp button on every page, show your opening hours, and keep contact forms short. A visitor who cannot find your number in five seconds will call the next result.
8. Measure what matters
Track calls, WhatsApp clicks, direction requests and form enquiries rather than just traffic. Google Business Profile shows calls and direction requests; Google Search Console shows which searches bring people to your site.
How long does local SEO take?
A complete Google Business Profile can start showing in map results within weeks. Service and location pages usually take a few months to build steady rankings, depending on competition in your area. Local SEO compounds: the work you do now keeps paying off.

Frequently asked questions
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work that helps your business appear when people nearby search for your services, both in Google Maps results and in the regular results. It combines your Google Business Profile, your website, reviews and local mentions.
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. You verify your business, then keep the details, photos and posts up to date.
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
A profile gets you on the map; a website gives Google and customers the detail to choose you. Service pages on your website help you rank for specific searches your profile alone cannot cover.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no fixed number. Aim for a steady flow of genuine reviews over time, and reply to them. Recent, detailed reviews matter more than a large old total.
How long before I see results?
Profile improvements can show within weeks. Website pages typically take a few months to rank steadily, depending on competition.
