There are hundreds of web design companies and freelancers across Kerala, from Kochi and Kozhikode to Malappuram, Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram. Most portfolios look good in screenshots. So how do you pick the one that will actually help your business grow, deliver on time and leave you in control?
Use these ten questions. A good studio will answer each one clearly, in writing, before you pay anything.
Scope and price
1. What exactly is included in the price?
Ask for the list of pages, features and deliverables. If it is not written down, assume it is not included. Vague quotes like "complete website" lead to disagreements later.
2. Is the price fixed?
A fixed price, agreed before work starts, protects you from surprise invoices. Ask what would change it. A good answer is "only if the scope changes, and we would agree the change in writing first".
3. When will the site launch?
A real launch date tells you the studio has planned the work and has capacity. "Two to three weeks, depending" usually means it has not. Ask what they need from you, and by when, to hit that date.
Content and design
4. Who writes the content?
Copywriting is often left out of quotes. Clear words are what turn visitors into enquiries, so make sure someone experienced is responsible for them, and that the price reflects it.
5. Is the design custom or a template?
Templates are fine for some budgets. Just know which one you are paying for, and ask to see how the design will be adapted to your business.
6. Can I see live sites, not just screenshots?
Open their recent work on your phone. Check the loading speed, how clearly the business is explained, and how easy it is to call, message or enquire. Ask what results the site has brought for the client, if they are willing to share.
Ownership and control
7. Who owns the domain, accounts and content?
Everything should be in your name: the domain, the hosting or platform account, analytics, and the content. Avoid studios that register your domain in theirs. It makes switching providers painful.
8. Can I edit the site myself?
You should be able to change text, images and prices without paying for every small update. Ask for a short training session at handover.
Growth and support
9. What SEO is included?
At minimum: unique page titles and descriptions, clean headings, image alt text, a sitemap, indexing in Google Search Console and a link to your Google Business Profile. Ongoing SEO is a separate service, and that is normal.
10. What happens after launch?
Ask how long edits are included, how quickly they respond, and what support costs afterwards. A small monthly care plan with defined hours is easier to budget than ad-hoc invoices.
Red flags to watch for
No written scope, or a scope that changes every time you ask.
Domain or hosting registered in the agency's name.
Promises of "first page on Google" within weeks.
Large advance payment with no clear timeline.
No live examples you can open and use.
Freelancer or studio?
A good freelancer can be excellent value for a small site. A studio usually brings more process: planning, copywriting, design, build and testing handled by people who specialise in each. Whichever you choose, the ten questions above apply equally.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find a good web designer in Kerala?
Shortlist studios with live work in your industry, then ask each the same questions about scope, fixed price, launch date, copywriting, ownership, SEO and support. Compare the written answers, not just the price.
Should the domain be in my name?
Always. Your domain is part of your business identity. Register it in your own name and give your designer access, not ownership.
What payment terms are normal?
Many studios work with a deposit to start, often 50%, and the balance at launch. Avoid paying everything upfront without a written scope and timeline.
Do I need a local web designer?
Not necessarily, but someone who understands your customers in Kerala or the GCC, and who you can reach easily, makes the project smoother.
